There is an estimated 19 million adults in the United States that live with depression and it is important for this medical condition to be diagnosed and treated properly. Depression is not gender specific and can affect the young, adults and the elderly. There is more than one type of depression and the difference between depression and just feeling blue is the symptoms do not go away after a day or even a week.
Symptoms of depression include the feeling of worthlessness or guilt, a depressed mood during most of the day, lack of concentration, insomnia, indecisiveness and a diminished interest in normal activities. There can be thoughts of death, a sense of restlessness and sadness, any of these symptoms can affect the person with depression and can continue affecting them for weeks at a time, rather than just having the blues for a few days.
Once depression has been diagnosed the medical professional will usually prescribe anti-depressants, exercises will often be recommended and therapy. These things in combination can often help to alleviate the symptoms that occur with depression. The types of depression that can affect people of all ages include major depression, chronic, atypical, bipolar, postpartum, psychotic and seasonal depression.
Major depression is the most serious form of the condition, closely followed by chronic depression, while Atypical depression does not always have the common symptoms of the disorder, but can include sudden weight gain or loss, sleeping more than usual and feelings of anxiousness. Depression is often accompanied with another medical condition, such as heart disease. This means that there should be a complete physical when depression is being diagnosed to ensure that it is not caused by and underlying medical condition that is not being treated. When there is another medical condition, along with depression the proper steps for treatment need to be taken.
