Are there any New Approaches that Could Bring Better Depression Treatments?

Antidepressants are used as treatment for depression which works by removing certain chemicals such as serotonin and norepinephrine from the brain. However these sorts of medicines don’t usually work on everyone as both these chemicals are neurotransmitters which regulated both brain and body functions and some of the patients may not respond well due to their body functioning improperly after the intake of such drugs. Patients who get to enjoy better reactions see improved results in the form of reduced depression and despair.

New forms of antidepressant drugs have arrived known as atypical antidepressants which works by affecting the neurotransmitters alone or along with serotonin. Some atypical antidepressants are Bupropion (Wellbutrin), Venlafaxine (Effexor), Duloxetine (Cymbalta), Mirtazapine (Remeron), Trazodone (Desyrel) and Nefazodone (Serzone).

Even though atypical antidepressants are new, scientists state that there hasn’t been any introduction of better drugs or ways that could treat depression in 20 years as all the drugs produced including the atypical ones all work in the same way. They also state that research should be instead pinpointed to why antidepressants don’t affect most of the patients and then figure out ways to fix those reasons and then invent new efficient drugs.

Scientists advise the patients that whilst approaches are being made towards better depression treatments, they should still undergo their current medication and psychological support.
