Can Depression Affect Children?
Children do suffer from depression. But the nature of their depression is quite dissimilar from the depression that a grown up faces. If a child is gloomy and unhappy it does not proof that he is under depression. But when these symptoms become constant, disturbing, and starts hampering the child’s public behavior, school performance, wellbeing, and family relations, it is an indication that the child is suffering from depression. Though depression among children is a serious disease but it is curable. A child suffering from depression tends to show various kinds of symptoms which are often misunderstood by the parents. Parents usually treat these signs as regular mental and emotional changes which usually a child goes through during his or her growing period. The major symptoms of depression among children are mood swings, a feeling of desperation and unhappiness. In many cases in spite of depression children in a controlled surrounding continue to behave properly but in most cases they tend to show considerable changes in their social behavior or a change in their looks, and perform poorly in school. Due to depression many children starts consuming alcohol or take drugs specially those who are above 12 years of age. At this age some even make an attempt to suicide. Those children who have a family record of aggression, alcohol abuse, mental or sexual or physical exploitation are more inclined to suffer from severe depression.
