How are Male Depression and Suicide related?
Females attempt to suicide more than men. However, successful suicide rate is high in men and women. Elderly white men are more susceptible to suicide. Men’s successful rate of suicide in higher because they use lethal weapons such as guns, which is irrecoverable. They act rapidly once the suicidal thought comes into their head. The talk less of suicide and show lesser symptoms.
When a person has suicidal thoughts, he should immediately get help from someone. He should try to talk with someone, or dial 911 or local emergency services number to get help. He can also contact family members, friends, doctors, or health care professionals.
Recent studies show that the suicide rate is increasing among men with the age of 65 to 75 years. Most of them do not seek for help before committing suicide. However, the suicidal thought comes in the 20s and again in the 60s for a male. Unemployed males commit more suicide due to their increased level of depression. In 1999, 33,000 people commented suicide in Japan because of unemployment. Some of them are often divorced and live in isolation from the society. Chronic illness can also increase the change for suicide. Lastly, some specific occupations cause more suicide such as farmer who have to live isolated and being unmarried.
