How does Pristiq work?
Also known as Desvenlafaxine or O-desmethylvenlafaxine, Pristiq is a prescription antidepressant drug used to treat severe cases of depression. It is in the drug group Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs). Pristiq is a synthetic form of vanlafaxine, a key active metabolite.
Pristiq functions by inhibiting transporter reuptake proteins that affect key neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. This leaves more neurotransmitters that are active in the synapse, which elevates mood. By ultimately rebalancing the levels of neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, Pristiq helps reduce depression and its symptoms.
Different drugs affect different people in different ways. Hence, it is important to let the drug start working before judging results. Usually, patients begin to feel the effects of the medication immediately. However, it is not unknown for some patients to have to wait a few weeks until the medication takes action. Side effects include but may not be limited to sleeping disorders, hyperhidrosis, fatigue, anxiety, constipation, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea and sexual dysfunction. All side-effects should be reported to a doctor.
Pristiq should not be taken without professional consultation and prescription. Likewise, a doctor should also specify duration of intake of Pristiq. Because these are powerful medications, it is important to be careful of its use, to avoid harm to the body as well as fatality.
