Levazine is an antipsychotic, antidepressant drug that is used in the treatment of moderate to severe anxiety, agitation and depression. It is also used for the treatment of schizophrenia. It contains 2 active ingredients namely Perphenazine and Amitriptyline. Perphenazine helps relieve anxiety, panic and agitation while Amitriptyline acts as a mood elevator and thus helps counter depression. Perphenazine works by blocking dopaminergic receptors in the brain. It blocks or reduces the action of the neurotransmitter dopamine which is associated with conditions like depression and schizophrenia. Amitriptyline is thought to work by increasing the concentration of norepinephrine and serotonin by inhibiting their re-uptake. When this drug is used for the treatment of agitation, depression and associated conditions, a low dosage is given initially. The dose is gradually increased till the level where significant response is obtained. After this, the dose should be maintained for the next two weeks. Then it is gradually reduced to a level that gives adequate clinical response. Once the condition has been managed effectively through psychotherapy and medication the dosage of Levazine can be gradually reduced and tapered off. There may be several off label uses of this medication like for the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder, insomnia and migraine headaches; such uses are recommended based on the discretion of the medical practitioner.
