What Age are Men at Risk for Depression?

Depression is a common illness that can affect anybody, at any age. Adults mostly between 49 to 54 years of age are at higher risk to get affected by depression. Depression is quite common among the male sexes. White men who are above 85 years of age are more likely get affected by the illness. Statistics reveal that in United States compared to 12 percent of women only 7 percent on men are likely to suffer from depression. Men irrespective of their age can get affected by depression but those between 40 and 60 years of age are more prone to depression. According to researchers, compared to women men are more capable of hiding their depression due to the consumption of alcohol. This results in fewer cases being reported about male depression. The most common causes of depression among men are a family history of suicide, depression or alcohol abuse, a highly impulsive behavior, lower stress tolerance level and a history of alcohol abuse. These problems are most common in men who are around 21 years of age. According to a British study unemployment and poverty also causes major depression among men. Thoughts of financial insecurity among men can prolong depression.
