What Age are Women at Risk for Depression?

Compared to men, women are more likely to suffer from depression. The main reasons for depression in women are obesity and alcohol abuse. According to Dr. Carolyn A. McCarty of Seattle Children’s Research Institute and her team of colleagues, women who generally suffer from any one of these two problems are between 21 and 30 years of age. The causes of depression in woman are due to a combination of hormonal and socio cultural factors. Child care, family responsibilities, and work pressure plays a major role in causing depression in women. Moreover women who suffer from financial insecurity and have a history of sexual abuse are more likely to develop depression. Hormonal changes in women due to reproductive and developmental process also lead to depression. Girls compared to boys are at a higher risk of being affected by depression when they reach puberty because of hormonal influences. During menstruation women generally goes through mood changes and few suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) which is a psychiatric syndrome which triggers depression. Fluctuation of hormones during pregnancy and childbirth in association with anxiety and relationship stress leads to the development of depression. During childbirth a speedy decline of the reproductive hormones makes women more vulnerable to depression. Also miscarriage is another major cause for depression among women. Hormonal instability during menopause can generate severe depression in most women.
