What Age Can Depression Affect Children?

Depression among children is very common nowadays. Depression is notably most common among boys who are below the age of 10 and girls who have attained the age of 16 commonly falls prey to the depression disease. Compared to children, adolescents are more at risk to suffer from bipolar disorder. But bipolar disorder among children tends to be of a more severe nature than in youngsters. Children depression is very different from adult depression. Due to depression they tend to show changes in their social behavior, loss of interest in school work which leads to poor performance in school and a change in their behavior with their family members. In most cases among small children these symptoms are misinterpreted by the parents as normal emotional and mental changes which are often associated with a child’s growth. The main symptoms of depression are mood swings, a feeling of desperation and misery and a loss of interest in social, educational and family matters. Medical studies have proved that in some cases due to depression children tend to react violently. Thus treating depression among children at an early stage is very essential. Children who are a little older, just above 12 years of age tend to react differently due to severe depression. Some starts to take drugs or alcohol and others especially girls tend to commit suicide.
