What are the side-effects of antidepressants?

Antidepressants are drug-induced treatments recommended for curing depression. However no drug comes without harm and antidepressants are known to bring along a string of side-effects which sometimes lead to people weighing odds whether to use them in the first place.

Medication comes in the form of drugs that consist of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), atypical antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). All these drugs are known to induce side-effects in some patients, some of them so severe that the medication is forced to be discontinued.

People may be prescribed:

  • SSRI medicines I.e. Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
  • Atypical antidepressants i.e. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) and Venlafaxine (Effexor)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors

These are known to create a wide range of side-effects which pour in the form of:

  • Decreased sexual drive
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Weight changes
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Extreme agitation
  • Sleepiness
  • Nervousness
  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Tremor or muscle seizures
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Worse state of depression
  • Aggressio

The effectiveness of antidepressants vary between depression struck patients; whilst some are seen to overcome depression others may very well have an adverse reaction and fall into a deeper much complex state due to sudden withdrawal or the possible side-effects.
