What are the Side effects of SSRIs?
Though all SSRI has the same mechanism and side effects, different SSRI has different pharmacological characteristics. This shows that different SSRI will give different side effects. On the other hand, one may find bad side effects with one SSRI, but not with another. The good part of SSRI is that they are not harmful even if taken with other medications or taken in excess. Some of the adverse effects of SSRI is discussed below.
General Side Effect
The general side effects include urinary retention, akathisia, paresthesia, apathy, headache, renal impairment, dizziness etc. These side effects will last for 4 to 8 weeks, until the body gets adapt to the dose. Most of these side effects will disappear as the body gets adapted. Generally the dose is increased gradually to identify the side effects, before it can be given at a full phase.
Sexual side effects
Various types of sexual dysfunction such as erectile dysfunction, anorgasmia and diminished libido can occur due to the intake of SSRI. In a recent studies made by doctors found that these side effects prevail among 17% to 41% of patients. Apart from that, SSRI can also be used to cure premature ejaculation.
