What are the Symptoms of Childhood Depression?
Children tend to show different signs of depression. These symptoms are quite different from those shown by adults. Often the depression symptoms in children are mistakenly considered by the parents as normal psychological and emotional transformation which children tend to go through during their growing phase. Due to this reason many cases of children depression remains undiagnosed for a considerable period of time. According to medical studies sometimes children exhibit violent behavior due to severe depression. In such cases they need to given immediate medical attention. The most important symptoms of depression are frequent change in mood, and a feeling of unhappiness and despair. Other signs of depression among children are bad temper, a prolonged feeling of sadness, social isolation, increase in negative response, changes in eating and sleeping habits, often weeping, loss of interest in school work, in hobbies and extracurricular activities, finding difficulty in focusing, frequent headaches and stomach aches which fail to react to treatment, and often a strong feeling of guilt. All children usually do not exhibit all these symptoms. They show different signs of depression in different situation and at different times. Children who are above 12 years of age often start taking alcohol and drugs to fight depression. Sometimes due to depression girls at this age try to commit suicide while among boys it is more probable for them to destroy themselves.
