What is Electroconvulsive therapy?
Electroconvulsive therapy is a therapy especially focused on relieving one from stress and depression. The applications of electroconvulsive therapy are as follows:
- To deal with depression.
- To tackle with insomnia or lack of sleep.
- In case of feeling of guilt and condition of low with spirits.
- In case of constant feeling of irritation
ECT makes use of electricity to cure insanity. Here, electrical shocks are given to the patients. These shocks change the normal functioning of the mind temporarily. This state is called as mental seizures. During this course, certain hormones called as neutron-transmitters are released. These transmitters help to deliver messages from one brain cell to another. This in turns increases the activity in the brain and thus helps in improving the mood of the individual and in relieving tension. Normally, 10-12 sittings of electroconvulsive therapies are required.
One must also take the side effects of the electroconvulsive therapy into account. Many studies have even hinted on brain damages caused by electroconvulsive therapy. Shortly after the therapy, it is seen that the patients suffer from temporary loss of memory, they tend to forget conversations. Extensive memory loss is also observed in some cases. All in all, electroconvulsive therapy when administered in the right way under medical surveillance can be of good use.
