What is Pristiq?
Pristiq is a prescription antidepressant drug in the drug group Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs). It is used to treat severe cases of depression. It functions by rebalancing the levels of neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, which influence mood. Also known as Desvenlafaxine or O-desmethylvenlafaxine, it is a synthetic form of vanlafaxine, a key active metabolite.
Pristiq was approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2008 as a treatment medication for adults with depressive disorder. Pristiq should not be taken without professional consultation and prescription. Likewise, a doctor should also specify duration of intake of Pristiq. Because these are powerful medications, it is important to be careful of its use, to avoid harm to the body as well as fatality.
Because different drugs affect different people in different ways, it is important to let the drug start working before judging results. Generally, patients begin to feel the effects of the medication immediately; however, it is not unknown for some patients to have to wait a few weeks until the medication takes action. Side effects include but may not be limited to;
- Sleeping Disorders
- Hyperhidrosis
- Fatigue
- Constipation
