What Types of Treatments are there for Childhood Depression?

In most number of cases children depression is handled in the same way as adult depression is treated. The treatment usually includes psychotherapy or counseling of the child and proper medication. In cases of children depression the doctors usually recommends psychotherapy as the first option and if it fails to show considerable improvement in the patient then antidepressant medicines are usually prescribed. Though there is no strong proof about the effectiveness of antidepressant medication in treating children depression. Some recent studies have stated that an anti depressant drug called Prozac has proved to be effective in curing depression among teenagers and children. This Prozac has also officially been accepted by the FDA as a drug which can be used to treat children depression especially for those who are between 8-18 years of age. Usually children suffering from bipolar disorder are treated through counseling. Doctors also prescribe the use of a mood stabilizer combined with an antidepressant medicine to treat the disease effectively. The use of antidepressant drug as a standalone can cause bouts of mania. The FDA has also stated that the use of antidepressant drugs sometimes causes thoughts of suicidal attempts among children and youngsters suffering from depression. Thus parents should be very careful while using such drugs and should consult a good doctor if any problems appear.
