When Is Sadness a Problem?
When the feeling of sadness persists for quite a long time, hurts deep and you feel that it is hard to appreciate the good things in your life, it is known as depression.
People suffering from depression might not even have a clue. Behavioral changes related to depression are often spotted by teachers or parents. It can even run within the family. It is more likely for a child to be depressed if one of the parents tends to get depressed.
Some kids tend to develop depression after losing someone they were very close with, a parent for example; long-term family problems, in addition to illness, drug use, alcohol, divorce or violence; neglect, child abuse or rape; even accidents, illness or burns that lasts for a long time. However, kids sometimes tend to get depressed for reasons that are not obvious.
Anybody, starting from kids to adults, can develop depression. And it is very crucial that anybody suffering from depression to seek assistance, no matter how old the person is. It is faster and easier to overcome depression with help. Usually treatments involve communicating openly with a person who is well educated on the subject of depression. Medications are also used sometimes in order to treat depression. In many cases combined treatment has to be used.
