Why Male depressions normally go undiagnosed?
Male depressions are not so popular compared to female depression. Thus male depression often goes without diagnosis. Some of the reasons behind this are:
Reluctance to discuss depression symptoms
Man does not talk about their symptoms openly like woman does. They often do not express their feelings and emotions to family members and friend. As a result, their depression is not identified and not diagnosed.
Seeing mental illness as a threat to your masculinity
Man tends to be self-controlled and they concentrate on independence, emotional stoicism and competitiveness. They think that it is “unmanly” to talk about their emotions and depressions. That is why they suppress their feelings unlike women.
Masking depression symptoms
Depression symptoms in male are less readily visible than in female. One such example is drinking alcohol and language abuse. However, male depression can be detected by looking at the physical symptoms, as they cannot hide this. When it comes to emotional symptoms, male often tends to hide, and it is hard to detect. Emotional symptoms often do not match typical condition for male, and as a result it might lead to misdiagnosis.
Resisting mental health treatment
Even after depression is detected in males, they often refuse to go for treatment due to the fear of being rejected from the society. They worry about losing their carrier and respect from the family.
